The demand for water in the country is increasing rapidly. The existing water resources are diminishing. Ground water in several habitations of our country is contaminated with excess salinity, fluoride, iron, arsenic, microbial contaminants etc. Drinking water with physical, chemical or biological contamination has harmful effects on human beings. It is estimated that about 70% of health problems can be traced to deficiency in the water quality. Technological intervention has become a necessity for a reliable and sustainable availability of clean water. |
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), primarily involved in the field of research in nuclear sciences, has societal commitment domains of research and application as well. Water is one of them. The meteoric rise in technology development and know-how transfer in desalination and water purification reflects the organization's commitment to the focus on cutting edge research for the unique diverse requirements of our country including the rural adaptability of the technology. BARC has developed and demonstrated several types of thermal and membrane based desalination and water purification technologies (Patent nos. 19596, 186210, 186375, 194101, 194106, 195317). We have expertise starting from development of water purification products/ technologies to construction of brackish/ seawater desalination plants from small size [Litres per Day (LPD) range for domestic use] to large size [Million Litres per Day (MLD) range for industrial/ municipal use], having product water quality ranging from potable to high end/ ultra-pure use. |
