Portable Thyroid Monitor (PTM) is used for monitoring of 131I content in thyroid gland of radiation workers handling 131I. PTM is incorporated with collimator, NaI(Tl) detector, associated electronics and mounting and movement system. PTM is a compact, portable and deployable system for monitoring in a lab or at affected site /field. It is a cost-effective system, capable of monitoring large number of persons with minimum manpower.
Portable Thyroid Monitor (PTM) is an in-vivo thyroid monitoring system for the monitoring of internal radioactive contamination due to 131I in radiation workers as well as in the members of public (MOP). This system is developed in response to the need of the DAE facilities for rapid and efficient thyroid monitoring during normal and emergency situations. 131I is an important fission product in Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and is highly volatile in nature, which may lead to thyroid uptake.
The developed system has features like easy to transport & install, simple to operate, provides detector collimation, chin rest to minimize positional errors, indicator for thyroid position etc. The additional feature of PTM is that its adjustable height for measurement of 131I thyroidal content in subjects of varying sitting height.
Major components of PTM are 51 mm dia. x 51mm thick NaI(Tl) detector, Multi-Channel Analyzer (MCA) and associated electronics, shielded collimator, detector mounting & movement system, data acquisition system and thyroid monitoring software (Ver.1.0). The thyroid monitoring software perform estimation of thyroid content, intake and CED as per ICRP-78.
