A portable apparatus for carrying out qualitative CT imaging at site with easy to use set-up has been developed by ITIS, BARC. The device is easy to install and ergonomically designed for holding the radiation source and data acquisition probes. Device with different sizes are available depending on size of the object. One or two persons can easily install the device and carry out the CT data acquisition. The manufacturing of accessories does not need high end machines. The device is useful in facilitating tomography with a view to minimizing radiation exposure to the working personnel. The device is rooted from an invention which has been granted Indian Patent (no 517803).

The mechanical motion of the device may be deployed manually or motorized. Detector and data acquisition system in advanced versions could be used in wireless mode or wired mode. The device is designed keeping in mind the radiation safety and orientation of the cylindrical objects and geometric irregularities on the surface. It is aimed at finding gross density distribution across the sample helping in troubleshooting by non-destructive method.
The apparatus and its method of using is based on the principle of industrial computed tomography. Data pertaining to attenuation of gamma radiation is acquired 360 degree around an object using radiation source of appropriate strength and multiple scintillation detectors like NaI (Tl) with a Single channel analyzer based data acquisition system. The data acquired properly can then be processed separately on a computer using image reconstruction software for diagnosis and troubleshooting, if necessary.
