Objective of the technology

Treatment of both surface and ground water into clean drinking water with minimal expenditure, for a prolonged period without any significant maintenance, and manufacture of the Terafil filtration discs by artisan skill using locally available raw materials (red clay, sand & wood saw dust) in rural sector, in order to obtain sustainable supply of drinking water to all class of society.

Users can collect drinking water from the stand alone Terafil water filters on community use basis.

Features of the technology

Red clay porous media, called TERAFIL^TM, removes turbidity, iron, micro-organisms from raw water through filtration, and also improves pH without use of chemicals, for supply of drinking water within BIS limits, with high rate of filtration, minimal expenditure and without use of electricity & maintenance for a long period.

Quality of treated water:

Turbidity                       : Within BIS limit

Iron                                : Within BIS limit

Micro-organisms : Near to BIS limit (A liter of treated water is pathogen free by  0.01gm bleaching powder)            

Increase of pH      : within 1.0

Color & odor        : Significantly removed

Rate of filtration   : 75 lit/hr and 130 lit/hr

Quality of raw water:

Source                     : Surface and ground water

Turbidity                : Up to 500 NTU

Iron                         : Up to 10 ppm

Construction of plant:

Chambers for holding raw & filter water are made of masonry / ferro-cement structures. Raw water is supplied to the plant by a pump / overhead tank through pipelines. These plants can be either stand alone or piped supplied water treatment plants.

·     Domestic: ~ Rs.350/- per unit

·     75 LPH stand alone Terafil plant: Rs.30,000/- including cost of pump, but excluding cost of shed & tube well.

·     130 LPH stand alone Terafil plant: Rs.50,000/- including cost of pump but excluding cost of shed & tube well.

Specific prerequisites for installation of the unit

Stand alone type Community Terafil water filters can be installed at any place near to existing surface or ground water sources. It is more suitable for raw water contaminated with turbidity / iron / micro-organisms.

a) 

Open space/shed required for installation of the unit

Space required for installation:

·        75 LPH plant: 3M X 3M open space

·        130 LPH plant: 5M X 5M open space

b) 

Power requirement

·         Nil for filtration

·         0.5 KW for supply raw water in to the community filters or NIL with over head tank water supply.

c)

Rs.15,000/- one time payment for micro and small entrepreneurs. Rs.60,000/- one time payment for other entrepreneurs. Plus 12.5% service tax extra.

Technology fee for licensing Community Terafil water filters:

Rs.10,000/- one time payment for micro and small entrepreneurs
