A three day Symposium on “Emerging Trends in Separation Science and Technology (SESTEC-2008)” is being organized by the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) during March 12-14, 2008 at Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi, Delhi. The objective of this Symposium is to provide a forum to scientists and engineers to discuss the recent advances in the area of separations of metals. Actinides, lanthanides, Zr, Co, Mo, Cs, Sr and platinum group metals are some of the key metals of interest to the Department of Atomic Energy. SESTEC-2008 will provide a platform to scientists and engineers to discuss emerging trends in the area of separation science and technology which are likely to have an impact on the DAE’s programme related to nuclear fuel cycle activities as well as production of isotopes.

Scope

The first use of solvent extraction based industrial process in DAE dates back to the late fifties and was aimed at the purification of uranium required for the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle. With our policy of three stages of nuclear power programme, many challenging areas have emerged especially for the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle which involves spent fuel reprocessing and radioactive waste management. The need for reprocessing of high burn up fuels and the growing need for environment protection have made it essential to look for alternative solvents as well as alternative technologies. SESTEC-2008 will provide a platform to scientists and engineers to discuss emerging trends in the area of separation science and technology which are likely to have an impact on the DAE’s programme related to nuclear fuel cycle activities as well as production of isotopes. Scope of the meeting is as follows:

  1. Design, synthesis and characterization of solvents, resins and membranes
  2. Design and development of separation equipments
  3. Separation science and technology in the nuclear fuel cycle
  4. Emerging separation technologies
  5. Electrochemical and pyrochemical separations
  6. Treatment of industrial effluents
  7. Isotope separations
  8. Membrane / chromatographic separations
  9. Radiochemical separations
  10. Separation of enantiomers / polymorphs

The scientific programme of the symposium will include invited talks by eminent scientists / engineers. Contributed papers will be presented in oral / poster sessions.

About Delhi

Delhi is a palimpsest, bearing the complexities, the contradictions, the beauty and the dynamism of a city where the past coexists with the present. Delhi has a long and chequered past. Few cities in the World can claim the long continuity and status that Delhi has enjoyed. Its history goes a long way off to the time of Mahabharata as Indraprastha, the capital of Pandavas. Among the dynasties that laid claim to Delhi were the Tomar Rajput (9th or 10th Century) and the Chauhan Rajputs (12th Century). With the defeat of Prithviraj, the Chauhan leader, in the hands of the Muslims towards the end of the 12th century, Delhi became the capital of Pathan Sultans and eventually of the Mughals. During the British rule for 200 years, when the country came under unified control, Calcutta became the capital but only to move back to Delhi in 1911. Since then Delhi has retained its position as the seat of governance. Delhi abounds in relics and remains a glorious reminder of its past. The city measures to 1485 sq km, harbouring over 15 million people of diverse cultures.
Delhi is India’s melting pot, dream and has absorbed, over the centuries, settlers and visitors from across the globe. Exploring the city can be a fascinating and rewarding experience.
