A four-day Symposium on Emerging Trends in Separation Science and Technology (SESTEC-2010) is being organized by the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) during March 1 - 4, 2010 at IGCAR, Kalpakkam. The objective of this symposium is to provide a forum to scientists and engineers to discuss the recent advances in different areas of separation science and technology. Actinides, lanthanides, Boron, Zirconium, Cobalt, Molybdenum, Caesium, Strontium, platinum group metals and heavy water are some of the key materials of interest to the Department of Atomic Energy. Attempts will be made to involve representatives of industry to participate in the meeting to help bridge the gap between the laboratory research and industrial applications.

Scope

The first use of solvent extraction based industrial process in DAE dates back to the late fifties and was aimed at the purification of uranium required for the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle. With our policy of three stages of nuclear power programme, many challenging areas have emerged especially for the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle which involves spent fuel reprocessing and radioactive waste management. The need for reprocessing of high burn up fuels and the growing need for environment protection have made it essential to look for alternative solvents as well as alternative technologies. SESTEC-2010 will provide a platform to scientists and engineers to discuss emerging trends in the area of separation science and technology which are likely to have an impact on the DAE’s programme related to nuclear fuel cycle activities as well as production of isotopes. Scope of the meeting is as follows:

  • Design, synthesis and characterization of solvents and resins
  • Design and development of separation equipments
  • Separation science and technology in the nuclear fuel cycle
  • Emerging separation technologies
  • Electrochemical and pyrochemical separations
  • Treatment of industrial effluents
  • Isotope separations
  • Membrane science and technology
  • Radiochemical separations
  • Water treatment and recycling

The scientific programme of the symposium will include invited talks by eminent scientists / engineers. Contributed papers will be presented in oral / poster sessions.
