3 Decades of RCA - The success Stories….
|
RCA has been established with a well-defined goal of exploiting the distinctly cost effective and eco-friendly advantages of advanced nuclear technology over the in use conventional technologies for the benefit of mankind through the cohesive and coordinated efforts of the member countries. The 3 E’s ( Energy, Environment and Education) along with sound water management policies ensures the quality of life in the modern society. Identification of these core sectors and the object oriented research activities intensely pursued by the member nations all through these years has brought perceptible and tangible results in the selected sectors as highlighted below. |
- Asian Regional Project on Radiation Preservation of Fish and Fishery Products
Irradiation of food and Horticultural products } increased shelf life
- Mutation Breeding (more than 500 varieties)
- increased agricultural output
- Radiation processing technology for food and food products is widely commercialized in many RCA member states and irradiated food materials from dried spice to tropical fruits and fisheries and meat products are accepted commercially. Improved versions of radiation induced mutant varieties of grams, groundnut, jute and agricultural seeds are developed and a number of high yielding seeds are now regularly used by farmers.
Urea Molasses Multinutrient Blocks (UMMB) is an agro-industrial product having high potential as an alternative feed supplementation affordable to all farmers for improved management of Livestock. |

NDT: gamma and neutron radiography, ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, liquid penetrant testing, nucleonic gauges and Eddy current testing,Heavy industries oriented
NCS: Pulp & paper, coal and petro-chemical industries
Tracer Techniques:
-
For on line trouble shooting in large chemical/petrochemical Industries
-
Ground water discharge, sediment/silt movement studies
Isotope techniques for water resources investigations in arid/semi arid regions, for management of coastal environment, dynamic changes in groundwater systems due to long-term exploitation, in dam safety and dam sustainability
» Non-destructive testing technologies employing radiation sources are increasingly used in RCA regions and many industrial facilities uses nucleonic control systems for optimized on-line output. |

Radiation Oncology is a special field of medicine dealing with the management of cancer using radiation sources. Nuclear Medicine offers both diagnostic as well as therapeutic advantages of radioisotopes. PET Radiopharmaceuticals are routinely used for the diagnosis of various organic disorders and alpha and beta radionuclide tagged biomolecules having high target specificity as tumor receptor binders are being developed for targeted
tumor therapy. Tissue grafting (bone & organs) using Radiation processing technology is well accepted and advanced procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and cancer related ailments using ionizing radiation from radionuclides are pursued. |
|
|
Infrastructure facilities for harmonized radiation protection of people and environment is well established in all RCA member states. Promotion of the use of radiation technology invariably includes the safe handling procedures to be followed. |
|
Safe handling, reprocessing and disposal of radioactive waste. Through the coordinated efforts, the member states has achieved comprehensive knowledge in radioactive waste handling procedures which is a mandatory requirement for carrying out the nuclear energy based programmes in a safe and secured manner . |
|
|
Radiation protection for workers and public. Effective analysis of ground water and airborne pollutants using radiation technology were beneficial to the RCA member states providing many economic advantages. Airborne particulate pollutants analysis by neutron activation method is practiced |
|
|
Tools for planning electricity expansion schemes, Plant management & safety
Comparative assessment of various energy options in the RCA member states has contributed to the establishment of better forecasts and optimisation of energy policy. |
|
|
Practical and extremely useful information exchange on research reactor operation and their better utilisation could be achieved. Research reactors are the source of radionuclides and setting up, safe operation and maximum utilisation of research reactors are very important for a successful implementation of non power applications of atomic energy. |
